When we are expected to return to the "real world" shortly after a devastating loss, it can be profoundly disorienting. I remember the first time I ventured out to my local grocery store, just hours after handing my most precious companion over to the vet tech for the last time. I was there to pick up flowers and a candle, but as I walked through the aisles, I felt like an imposter in my own life. On the outside, I looked perfectly normal, and everyone around me was going about their day, blissfully unaware that my world had been shattered. 

It was surreal to witness the continuity of life when my own had been completely upended. The hardest part was interacting with the world while grappling with this new, heart-wrenching reality. In those moments, the dissonance between my inner turmoil and the ordinary flow of life felt almost unbearable.

Amidst this pain, I found solace in a simple bracelet. Wearing it in those first several months became a way to anchor myself in my grief.
